Imperdibles
Sobre Perito Moreno
Perito Moreno: Raw Patagonia at Its Finest
Perito Moreno is the capital of the Río Deseado department in Santa Cruz province. Here Patagonia shows itself unfiltered: endless steppe, constant wind and a frontier hospitality that stays with you long after you leave.
Cueva de las Manos: UNESCO World Heritage Site
163 km from town, in the Pinturas River canyon, the Cueva de las Manos was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Its rock paintings are between 9,000 and 13,000 years old — the oldest artistic expression in the Americas. Negative hand silhouettes, guanacos and hunting scenes bring the first Patagonians to life.
The Patagonian Steppe
Low grasslands, thorny bushes, pink flamingos on salt lakes and a horizon that never ends. A landscape demanding stillness that rewards with a freedom hard to find anywhere else on the planet.
Historic Estancias
Century-old ranches where you can experience gaucho culture: shearing, cattle drives, open-air asados and nights under star-filled skies. Several offer accommodation and guided steppe excursions.
Lake Buenos Aires and the Marble Cathedral
Argentina's largest lake — called Lago General Carrera on the Chilean side — with an impossibly deep blue. From Perito Moreno you can easily reach its shores and the stunning Marble Cathedral, a unique geological formation accessible by boat.
How to Get There
Own airport with flights from Buenos Aires and Comodoro Rivadavia. A key stop on Ruta 40, Argentina's legendary north–south highway.
Best Time to Visit
Spring and austral summer (October–March) for long days ideal for exploring the steppe and the Cueva de las Manos.
