The Route of the 7 Lakes: the most beautiful road in Patagonia

On a map it looks like a stretch of road between two towns. Once you drive it, you understand why people never forget it. The Route of the 7 Lakes follows National Route 40 from Bariloche to San Martín de los Andes through 352 kilometers of raw Patagonian landscape.

The lakes along the way

The name comes from the seven lakes the road reveals one by one: Lácar, Machónico, Falkner, Villarino, Escondido, Correntoso, and Espejo. Each one has its own character. Between lakes there are viewpoints, the Vulianco waterfall, stone beaches for a stop, and short trails you can walk in minutes.

Practical information

Duration: Full day. If you have your own car, you can take it at a slower pace and stop overnight in Villa La Angostura or Villa Traful.

National parks: The route crosses Nahuel Huapi National Park and Lanín National Park. Entry fee applies to each.

Season: Year-round, but the experience changes:

Summer (Oct to Apr): The route is fully open. Long days let you enjoy it without rushing. More organized excursions depart from Bariloche.

Autumn (Mar to May): The Patagonian forest turns spectacular shades of red, gold, and orange. Many travelers consider this the best time.

Winter (Jun to Aug): Some unpaved stretches may be complicated by snow or ice. Organized excursions run less frequently. The snowy landscape has its own beauty.

How to do it: Organized excursion from Bariloche (full day, with guide). Rental car or motorbike, with full freedom to stop whenever you want. By bicycle, for those with several days and experience on the road.
