Cerro Catedral: skiing in winter, mountain all year round
Cerro Catedral is 19 kilometers from downtown Bariloche and is the largest, most complete ski resort in South America: nearly 100 kilometers of runs, drops for every level, and a base village that feels like a small town during the season.
In winter: skiing and snowboarding
From June to September, the mountain is the heart of Bariloche. There are runs for first-timers learning that same morning and technical circuits for international-level skiers. The lifts can carry 22,000 people per hour. Full equipment rental, lessons, mountain restaurants, and that one-of-a-kind feeling of being on a snow-covered peak.
In summer: trekking and high-altitude trails
When the snow melts, the mountain transforms. The lifts keep running and take you up to high-altitude platforms where trails begin with sweeping views of Patagonian lakes and forests. The most sought-after trail leads to Refugio Frey, on the shore of Laguna Toncek: a mountain hut reached after about 4 hours of walking, where you can spend the night surrounded by rock spires.
